What Is a Prop Firm? How Funded Trading Accounts Work

A plain-English guide to proprietary trading firms: how evaluations work, what a funded account really is, how profit splits are paid and what to check before you join one.

A proprietary trading firm, usually shortened to prop firm, gives traders access to a larger account than most people could fund on their own. Instead of depositing $100,000 of your own money, you pay a one-time evaluation fee, prove you can trade within a set of risk rules, and then trade a funded account where you keep a share of the profits.

For many retail traders this is the most realistic way to trade meaningful size without risking their savings. But the model has rules, fees and fine print that are worth understanding before you start. This guide covers how it all works.

How a prop firm works, step by step

  1. Choose a challenge. You pick an account size (for example $10,000 or $100,000), a trading model and a platform. The evaluation fee scales with the account size.
  2. Pass the evaluation. You trade a simulated account and must hit a profit target without breaking the risk rules, such as a maximum daily loss and a maximum overall drawdown.
  3. Get funded. Once you pass, you receive a funded account with the same risk rules but no profit target. Your job now is to trade consistently and protect the account.
  4. Request rewards. When you are in profit, you request a payout and receive your share, often 80% or more, through methods such as crypto or a payment platform.

Simulated vs. live capital

Most modern prop firms, including BlackProp, run evaluations and many funded stages on simulated accounts that mirror real market pricing. Your payouts are real, but it is important to understand that you are not directly trading the firm's own cash in every stage. Always read the firm's terms to see exactly how its funded stage works.

Why prop firms exist

Prop firms are looking for traders who manage risk well. The evaluation is a filter: it shows whether a trader can follow rules, control losses and stay consistent. Traders who pass and stay profitable share their gains with the firm, and the evaluation fees help fund the operation and the payouts.

For the trader, the appeal is leverage of a different kind: instead of growing a $2,000 personal account for years, you can prove your skill on a $50,000 or $100,000 account and earn a share of the results.

The rules you will see at almost every prop firm

RuleWhat it meansTypical range
Profit targetThe gain you need to pass a phase5% to 10% per phase
Max daily lossThe most you can lose in a single day3% to 5%
Max drawdownThe most the account can fall overall6% to 10%
Minimum trading daysDays you must trade before passing0 to 5 days
Profit splitYour share of funded-account profits70% to 90%

Breaking a hard rule, such as the daily loss or max drawdown limit, usually ends the evaluation. That is why risk management matters more than strategy when you trade a challenge. We go deeper on this in our guide to daily loss and drawdown rules.

One-step, two-step and instant funding

  • Two-step evaluations have two phases, for example an 8% target in phase 1 and a 5% target in phase 2. They usually have the most forgiving drawdown rules and the lowest fees.
  • One-step evaluations have a single phase. They are faster, but the rules are often tighter.
  • Instant funding skips the evaluation for a higher fee. You trade a funded account from day one, typically with stricter drawdown and consistency rules.

What to check before you choose a prop firm

  • Published rules. Every rule should be written down before you pay, including how drawdown is calculated and whether it trails.
  • Payout terms. How often can you request a payout, what is the minimum, and how is it paid?
  • Markets and platforms. Make sure the firm supports what you actually trade, whether that is forex, futures or crypto, on a platform you know.
  • Reputation. Read recent reviews on independent sites and check whether traders report being paid on time.
  • Support. You want a firm that answers questions quickly, before and after you buy.

How BlackProp approaches it

BlackProp offers account sizes from $5K to $200K across forex/CFD, futures and crypto, with more than 150 symbols, three trading models and a profit share of up to 90%. Rules are published before you start, your progress is tracked in one dashboard, and rewards can be received by crypto (USDT, Ethereum, Bitcoin and BNB) or Rise. You can also try the platform with a free trial before buying a challenge.

Whichever firm you choose, treat the evaluation as a test of discipline, not a race. The traders who pass are usually the ones who risk small, follow a plan and are happy to take their time.
